About Wayfaring Farm

Wayfaring Farm is a land restoration project that is ongoing. We have spent 5 years so far, restoring this piece of lower downland which had been neglected for 30 years. Situated within the South Downs National Park, this is a heritage site which is perfect for nature lovers.

Conservation

When we arrived the site was 12.5 acres of brambles and blackthorn. All monies received from the camping are used to take the project forward, and go towards future project work – increasing accessibility for a wide range of people, tree planting, seeding newly recovered areas after scrub removal, tools, upkeep of machinery, compost loos and so on. Tree planting will soon become a major focus due to the effect that Ash Dieback is having here and throughout the South East.

Wildlife and ecology

Wayfaring Farm has an abundance of wildlife. If you like to see buzzards, peregrines, rare bees, badgers, foxes and rabbits – and deer if you are up early! – then you will truly appreciate this unique, organic corner of downland. It’s never been treated with pesticides and herbicides since it has been part of the family (as far back as 1923), and this has allowed many species to thrive that it is now unusual to see elsewhere

Preserving and enhancing the lower chalk down land of Wayfaring Down has guided our process throughout, and the work that we have carried out here respects all the natural flora and fauna native to such a setting. Please be aware that there are rabbit burrows, and badger sets through the land.

Farm animals

Wayfaring Farm is home to 12 Herdwick sheep. Native to the Lake District they are interested in humans, but not tame, and are well suited to the varied terrain they find themselves in. The variety of plants and shrubs they have access to means they have a nutrient- packed diet with no need for supplements or extra food. Please do not feed the sheep.

There are some beautiful horses on the other side of the fence, please do not feed the horses, they too are on a special diet.
